EFCC Sets Up Four-Man Panel to Probe Diezani on the Alleged Purchase of $6.9m Mobile Stage and Also all the NNPC Accounts She Supervised

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has commenced a full investigation into the activities of the immediate past Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

It was learnt on Sunday that the commission constituted a four-member committee of crack detectives to probe all the NNPC accounts which were supervised by the former minister. It was learnt that the committee was led by a Superintendent of Police, who was seconded to the commission.

Investigations revealed that the other three members of the committee were pioneer civilian operatives of the commission with high capacity for investigation.

Men Impersonate CAC Pastor, Defraud Restaurant Manager

The police have arraigned one Joshua Kolawole and Ademola Adeleke for allegedly impersonating a Christ Apostolic Church pastor and defrauding a restaurateur in Yaba, Lagos. The suspects were arraigned before a Chief Magistrates’ Court, Yaba, Lagos.

Kolawole and Adeleke were said to have defrauded a restaurant manager, one Kehinde Sulaimon on August 6, 2015. On the day of the incident, Kolawole was said to have disguised as a pastor, while Sulaimon posed as another victim.

It was learnt that Kolawole stopped the victim by the roadside and claimed to have seen a revelation about her. Meanwhile, Adeleke, who disguised as another victim, stopped by and joined in the discussion.

Congregation Chases Pastor from Church for Impregnating Member in Lagos State

There was commotion on Sunday at the United Methodist Church, Mafoluku, in the Oshodi area of Lagos as members of the church rejected their pastor and chased him away for allegedly impregnating his housemaid.

It was learnt that the pastor, Barkuma Andrew, was stopped from leading the church seven months ago when the housemaid, who was also a member of the church, Grace, had complications after aborting the pregnancy.

Andrew lives with his wife, children, wife’s cousin, Favour, and Grace in a three-bedroomed flat on the church premises.

These are definitely bad days for 20-year-old Precious Ihemine, a JSS 2 student from Abia State, who claims that her boyfriend impregnated and abandoned her. Ihemine is in police custody in Asaba, Delta State capital, where she is not finding it easy to free herself from police allegations of engaging in baby trafficking, following her arrest at the home of a polyethene packaging materials producer, John Mary Ihezue, who she claims is her employer.

Arrested with her is another 20-year old, Blessing Okafor, who was also impregnated by her lover in a certain village in Enugu State. Both pregnant 20-year-olds were nabbed with six other ladies and two boys, when the police stormed the home-cum-business premises of Ihezue, who the police accused of running a baby factory.

Popular Nollywood actress, Ini Edo, has revealed that distance, ir­reconcilable differences, and incompatibility are the factors that largely contributed to her failed marriage.

She made this known while speaking on Rubbing Minds, a show hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu on Channels Televi­sion last week. According to Ini, distance plays a very important role in a relationship. 

“No mat­ter the indifference or incompatibility, if you’re together in love, a lot of things can actually work out. Howbeit, you don’t get to work things out when there is no contact. Stop Playing Down Buhari's Achievements - Presidency Tells PDP

The presidency on Saturday advised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to stop playing down achievements so far recorded by President Muhammadu Buhari. This is contained in a statement issued in Abuja by the president’s Senior Special Assistant, Media, Malam Garba Shehu.

Shehu said the PDP should rather bury its head in shame for subjecting Nigeria to the ``worst economic plunder through corruption’’ in its recent history.

Jonathan, Alison-Madueke Face Probe Over Phoney Purchase of $6.9m Campaign Stages

The ongoing probe of the immediate past administration by President Muhammadu Buhari is to beam its searchlight on the alleged purchase of three mobile stages, costing $6.9m, by former President Goodluck Jonathan and two of his officials, a Presidency source has said.

According to a document, which was obtained from the Presidency on Saturday, the deal, which is now a subject of investigation, was allegedly carried out by Jonathan; his Chief Security Officer, Mr. Gordon Obuah; and former Minister of Petroleum, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke.

The fund was said to have been withdrawn from one of the numerous accounts of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. The $6.9m (about N1.37bn) was said to have been withdrawn for the purpose of buying three pieces of 40-feet mobile stages for use by Jonathan during mass public speaking events.

Fashola Spent Billions of Public Fund on Quality Projects, So Stop Castigating Him – APC

The All Progressives Congress in Lagos State has defended former Governor Babatunde Fashola over an allegation that the former governor misappropriated public funds. The APC described the contracts awarded by Fashola while in office as a reflection of his love for quality jobs.

The APC spokesperson in the state, Mr. Joe Igbokwe, in a telephone conversation with Punch on Thursday, asked the public to stop castigating Fashola for the amount of money he spent on execution of projects while on office.

Obasanjo, is a Liar, Economic Illiterate – Wole Soyinka

The Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has said that he has no respect for Obasanjo, who he described as an indescribable liar. Soyinka carpeted the former president on Friday night when he was responding to questions during a programme tagged: ‘An evening with Wole Soyinka’, organised by Globacom.

Asked to respond to Obasanjo’s assessment of him in the former president’s book titled ‘My Watch’, where he notes that Soyinka is good at hunting and wines but a political illiterate, Soyinka said that he was hardly bothered because he believed that Obasanjo was a liar. Soyinka said, 

“Obasanjo is entitled to his opinion. But the question is: ‘Who respects the opinion of a liar?’

Following the anger that has trailed President Mu­hammadu Bu­hari’s latest appointments into key federal positions, which many believed are skewed towards the north, the presidency, has assured that the appoint­ments will spread round the country in no distance future.

Presidential spokes­man, Femi Adesina said though political appoint­ments are entirely the Presi­dent’s prerogative, nobody can fault the fact that those appointed so far were on merits. He said:

In another case that has highlighted the increasing child sexual abuses in Nigeria, a 65-year-old landlord, in Akowonjo area of Lagos, Mr. Ganiyu Sani, has allegedly raped a seven-year-old girl, Blessing. But this time, the parents of the victim believe he did it for ritual purposes.

The civil servant mother of the victim told Punch that on Monday, August 17, 2015, when she got back from work and was having dinner with her children, Blessings started to touch her crotch and complain of pain.

“I felt the part she was touching and asked what was wrong with her. I thought she was referring to her lower abdomen and believed it must be stomach ache. But she insisted that it was her private part.

Atiku's Daughter Sworn-in As Adamawa Commissioner of Health, Forfeits Salary and Allowances

Dr Fatima Atiku, daughter of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and newly appointed Adamawa Commissioner of Health has forfeited her salary and allowances for use in revitalizing the health sector in the state.

Fielding questions from newsmen in Yola on Friday after being sworn –in along with 21 other commissioners, Fatima, a Consultant, said she was making the sacrifice because of the numerous challenges in the health sector.

"I am very grateful to the governor for appointing me to head the Health Ministry.

Over 200 Migrants Feared Dead and 200 Rescued as Two Boats Packed with Refugees Sink Off the Coast of Libya

More than 200 migrants are feared dead and another 200 have been rescued after two boats capsized off the coast of Libya in the latest tragedies to hit the Mediterranean. 

The first boat, which was carrying around 50 people, overturned early yesterday followed by the second which sank while overloaded with around 400 passengers. Libyan coastguards said they had rescued around 200 people and had worked overnight to search for survivors.
