Press Release from Dr Okezie Ikpeazu to Abians: Remain Calm and Law Abiding, Am Still Your Governor

Following a court order, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) today issued a Certificate of Return to Mr Uche Ogah, who came second at the last Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primaries in Abia State.

However, an order of Injunction has now been secured by Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu and it prevents Abia Chief Justice or any other Judge from swearing-in Uche Ogah as Governor of the state while he remains in office pending the determination of his appeal. I have received with concern, report of the purported issuance of Certificate of Return to Mr. Uche Ogah by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as governor of Abia State, despite dependency of a notice of appeal and motion for stay of the orders made by Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Thursday issued certificate of return to Uche Ogah, of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as the new governor of Abia state.

This follows Monday’s judgement of the Federal High Court in Abuja annulling the election of Okezie Ikpeazu over alleged tax evasion.

The Justice Okon Abang-led court had held that Ikpeazu submitted false tax information to his party, the PDP during the governorship primary in December 2014, and as such was not qualified to contest for the party’s primaries.

EFCC Arraigns Man for N11.5m Visa Scam

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 arraigned Abdulsalam Goni Sanda before Justice Olubunmi Banjoko of the Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Gudu, Abuja on a 4-count charge bordering on obtaining by false pretence to the tune of N11,450,000.00 (eleven million, four hundred and fifty thousand naira).

Sanda was alleged to have presented himself as an adhoc staff with the Saudi Arabian Embassy and also a travel agent with the capacity to secure visa for the complainant, one Bello Isah and 49 others who wanted to perform the 2014 hajj.

Court Strikes Out Suit Challenging Buhari’s School Certificate as Lawyer Withdraws Suit Over Alleged Threat to His Life

The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, has, struck out a suit challenging the veracity of the academic credentials of President Muhammadu Buhari. Justice Adeniyi Ademola held that by “section 50(2) of the federal high court civil procedure rules the matter is hereby struck out”. 

The plaintiff, a legal practitioner, Nnamdi Nwokocha-Ahaaiwe, filed a notice at the court to discontinue the suit. Nwokocha-Ahaaiwe had alleged that Buhari was not qualified to aspire for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria because he did not sit for the Cambridge West African School Certificate, WASC, in 1961 as he claimed. 

The notice of discontinuance dated June 27 read: “Take note that the plaintiff in this originating summons, Nnamdi Nwokocha-Ahaaiwe, hereby discontinues this action.” 

Student, Two Others to Die for Robbery

Justice Lateef Lawal-Akapo of Ikeja High Court, yesterday, sentenced three persons, Wasiu Arepo, an aluminum products manufacturer; Oluwaseun Idowu, a driver, and Ganiyu Hassan, a student and commercial motorcycle rider, to death by hanging. 

The convict were found guilty on a four-count charge of armed robbery and murder contrary to Section 402 Subsection 2(a) of the Criminal Code Law of Lagos State, 2011, and Section 319 subsection 1(a) of Criminal Code Law of Lagos State, 2011. 

According to the prosecution, the convicts committed the offence on February 5, 2011 at Aleke village, Imota at 2a.m. 

The convicts were said to have stormed the house of one Mrs Adijatu Bakare and her husband, Abubakar, and demanded the money Abubakar withdrew from bank a day before. 

NNPC, China Sign $50bn Memorandum of Understanding on Oil and Gas Development

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) worth 50 billion dollars with some Chinese companies for infrastructure development in oil and gas sector.

The information is contained in a statement issued by the Corporation on Wednesday in Abuja.

It stated that ``NNPC wishes to announce the recent landmark strides the Corporation has achieved in its bid to bridge the infrastructure funding gaps in the Nigerian oil and gas sector.

``This comes in the form of a first of its kind road show in China, where MoU worth more than 50 billion dollars will be spent on investments in oil and gas infrastructure, pipelines, refineries, power, facility refurbishments and upstream sector.''

Lebanese Dupes Three Lagos Customers, Absconds with N170m in Lagos State

A Lebanese and bureau de change operator, Aly Sayad, has been accused of absconding with $487,700 (about N170m)  in the Victoria Island area of Lagos State.

It was learnt that three businessmen had approached the suspect in his office on Idowu Taylor Street, Victoria Island, to help them change $487,700 to naira.

He was alleged to have left the men in the office after collecting the money, saying he was going to the bank to transfer the naira equivalent to their various bank accounts.

After waiting for hours, the victims were said to have gone to the bank where Sayad claimed he was going to do the transaction, but could not find him.

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Ojo Maduekwe Dies at 71

A former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, is dead. He died in Abuja on Wednesday evening. 

The cause of his death was however unknown, but the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, Sen. Walid Jibril, confirmed the death.

Until his death, Maduekwe was the secretary of the Board.

Literary icon, Elechi Amadi, the Writer of the Book "Sunset in Biafra," Dies at 82

Popular Nigerian author, Capt. Elechi Amadi, has died aged 82.

Amadi, who wrote famous books like The Concubine, Isiburu, Sunset in Biafra, and Peppersoup and The Road to Ibadan, died at about 3:15pm on Wednesday, about a week after he became ill.

A close confidant to the literary icon told our correspondent that the deceased was billed to be at Wednesday’s annual book reading programme organised in Port Harcourt by Total Exploration and Production, but could not make it as a result of his ill health.

His wife, Preye, represented him at the event.

Frozen Account: Fayose Drags EFCC to Court Demanding a Mandatory Order TO Unfreeze His Accounts

Governor Ayodele Fayose has dragged Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and a second generation bank before a Federal High Court in Ado Ekiti over freezing of his personal bank accounts.

The court has ordered the anti-graft commission and the bank to show cause why an Order Exparte to unfreeze the governor’s accounts, submitted yesterday by the Fayose’s legal team, should not be upheld.

The judge gave Monday, July 4 for the EFCC and the bank to appear in court with the said evidence.

Democracy on Trial: Ike Ekweremadu Writes Int'l Community, Says Nigeria Democracy Is In Great Danger

Barely 24 hours after arraignment, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu has written to the United Nations (UN), European Union (EU) and governments of the United States and United Kingdom, alleging attempts by the government of President Muhammadu Buhari to truncate Nigeria’s democracy.

Also copied in the letter were the United States Congress and European Union (EU) Parliament. The statement reads:

Woman Burns Her Seven-Year-Old Nephew’s Genitals for Stealing N100

The police in Lagos State have arrested a woman identified simply as Saratu, for allegedly burning the private parts of her seven-year-old nephew, Razak Qudus.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Saratu allegedly burnt the boy’s private parts with a stove after he was accused of stealing N100. The victim, who is a primary four pupil in a private school, lived with the suspect in the Afariogun, Oshodi area of the state.

It was gathered that Saratu’s neighbours reported the matter to a coordinator of the Child Protection Network, Ebenezer Omejalile, living in the area, who in turn reported to the police.

United Nations Releases $13m for Life-Saving Assistance to 250,000 People in North-East Nigeria

The United Nations on Monday released 13 million dollars from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to provide life-saving assistance to 250,000 people in the North-east area of Nigeria.

Mr Stephen O’Brien, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, issued the release. According to the UN, the destruction of crops and looting of livestock have left many people unable to support their families.

``No fewer than 50,000 people need seeds and tools for the upcoming planting season and CERF funding will help them to rebuild their livelihoods.''

Senator Saraki and the Fictive Cabal: Presidency Replies Saraki on His Claim that there is ``a Government within His Government.’’

President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, claims there is “now a government within the government of President Buhari”, which has allegedly seized the apparatus of Executive powers to pursue a nefarious agenda.

This claim by Senator Saraki would have been more worth the while, if it had been backed with more information. If he had proceeded to identify those who constitute the “government within the government,” it would have taken the issue beyond the realm of fiction and mere conjecture. But as it stands, the allegation is not even worth the paper on which it was written, as anybody can wake from a troubled sleep, and say anything.

Police Arrest 41-year-old man for Impregnating His Daughter and the Mother for Aborting the Pregnancy

A 41-year-old man, Raymond Anyanwu, who reportedly raped and impregnated his 15 years old daughter, said that frustration led him into the act. 

Anyanwu, who committed the offence at Ajao Estate, Isolo, said: “I started sleeping with my 15-year-old daughter sometime around January, after I lost my job. 

“I am a transporter, but I took to alcohol after I lost my job and could not meet up with my responsibilities as the head of the house.” 

Vanguard gathered that Raymond Anyanwu sleeps with his daughter when his wife has gone to work. 

Computer Teacher Gives Schoolgirl N30 After Rape

The police in Lagos State have arrested a computer teacher, Cosmos Ubaja, for allegedly raping a 14-year-old schoolgirl in the Owutu area of Ikorodu.

The victim, Victoria (pseudonym), was lured by the suspect when she went to his shop to make photocopies after school hours. Victoria, who attends a public secondary school in Owutu, Ikorodu, had been allegedly raped by the suspect on several occasions in eight months.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the victim, who is in Junior Secondary School, Class 3, was given pittances such as N50, N100 and N30, each time the suspect raped her.

EFCC Arrests Fayose’s ‘Best Friend’ Over N4.7bn Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested a man, whom it described as the best friend of Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State.

The suspect, Mr. Abiodun Agbele, it was learnt, allegedly helped Fayose to handle over N1.219bn during the Ekiti State governorship election in 2014.

The money was said to have been part of the N4.7bn that was siphoned from the imprest account of the Office of the National Security Adviser and deposited into the bank account of a company belonging to the sons of a former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro.

Court Oders Governor Ikpeazu Of Abia State, to Vacate Office Over Fake Tax Clearance

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu, to vacate office immediately for submitting false information to his party, PDP, for the party’s governorship primary in December 2014.

Justice Okon Abang in a judgment today, ordered INEC to immediately issue a certificate of return to the plaintiff, Uche Ogah, who polled the second highest number of votes in the primary.

Forgery of Senate Rule: Court Grants Saraki, Ekweremadu, Others Bail After They Plead Not Guilty

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu and former clerk to the National Assembly, Salisu Maikasua, were docked at the the Federal High Court Abuja this morning for alleged forgery of senate orders. 

They are facing a two-count-charge bordering on conspiracy and forgery of senate rule in 2015. They all pleaded not guilty when the charges were read out.

Shortly after the defendants entered their plea to the charge marked CR/219/16, the Director of Public Prosecution, DPP, Mr. Mohammed Diri, notified the court of FG’s counter-affidavit opposing release of the accused persons on bail.

Ambassadorial List: No Qualified Ambassadorial Nominees from Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Ondo and Plateau States - Federal Govern­ment

Last Wednesday, Sen­ate, put on hold the confir­matory process of the 47 ambassadorial nominees forwarded to it by Presi­dent Muhammadu Buhari on June 9, saying it failed the federal character test, as four states did not have nominees on the list. The states are: Bayelsa; Ebonyi; Ondo and Plateau.

Senators kicked against the list at plenary and in­vited Secretary to the Gov­ernment of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal and Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey On­yeama.

They are scheduled to appear before the Commit­tee on Foreign Affairs on Monday, July 11, to explain why the four states have no nominees.

However, the federal Govern­ment has said contrary to the reason given by the Senate for rejecting the list of ambassadorial nominees sent to it for consideration, federal character, as provid­ed in the 1999 Constitution (as amended), was fulfilled.

The Bauchi State Government Uncovers 6,065 Ghost Workers on Payroll

The Bauchi State Government said it had discovered 6,065 ghost workers on its payroll. The discovery followed the workers’ verification the state government compelled all civil servants to do since January this year.

The state Governor, Mohammed Abubakar, disclosed this during an interactive session with members of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Bauchi State Council, at the Government House, Bauchi,  on Sunday.

He admitted that there were lapses in the last rounds of the exercise in the state.

He said there were two set of errors in the last phase of the verification. The errors, he said, were human mistake which he apologised for, while he described the other as “deliberate sabotage.”
