It will take Nigeria decades, perhaps centuries, to catch up with the West in science and technology.
This does not mean we should not keep trying to catch up wit them. We should. However, we ought as a nation to focus on areas where we have a comparative advantage over the West.
In the area of sports and the arts, Nigeria has an advantage over the West. Our people are physically strong and very strong willed.
Flowing from the above, I do not see why we continue to underperform at the Olympics.
I believe Nigeria has all it takes to be the number one medal nation in the Olympics giving our vast human resources.
Yet we keep underperforming. Why?
I believe the problem lies in our preparation. We leave off preparing to the very last minute and those who are less endowed than us over prepare and that is how they beat us.
Leadership expert, Brian Tracy, once said 'Every minute you spend in planning saves 10 minutes in execution; this gives
you a 1,000 percent return in investment.
Notice the word investment. In Nigeria we do not see sports as a business hence we do not invest in it.
But nothing brings easy money or changes a country's negative image like sports.
According to Forbes magazine, last year, the top 100 earning athletes in the world earned a total of $3.15 billion.
That is twice the amount that Lagos state budgeted in 2016.
But the sad thing is that there is no Nigerian on that list.
We do not appreciate the earning power of sports.
Also, in the past, Jamaica had a bad reputation and Jamaicans were stereotyped, but Usain Bolt, through sports, has single handedly changed the reputation of Jamaica.
Today, Nigeria has a money problem and a reputation problem. We can use sports to kill two birds with one stone.
So, let us start investing in sports. Let us not wait for foreigners to rescue our national football team or to motivate them with $390,000.
Let us support our athletes and not wait for Chierika Ukogu to pay her way to the Olympics to represent Nigeria.
Sports is a business, not a waste of time. For any business to thrive, you must invest both time and money in it.
